This is my most favorite theater ever! You know what they say about people who obsess over screen size...
All kidding aside, this theater is perfect. The staff is wonderful, it's a cool setting, you get to drink beer while watching your movie, and it doesn't feel like a big, corporate-owned mega-theater. I love it. I hope it exists forever! And the screen size is just fine; probably the same as any theater, but the room is so large that it looks small if you're sitting in the way back.
Definitely try it out. Once you do, you'll feel dirty if you ever go back to the mega-theaters!
You will pay full price here for mostly second rate Indy movies. Tickets are priced like a modern cineplex but the arm rest is too hard and the seating is very uncomfortable. You have to watch out too for an occasional beer bottle rolling down the seats. The projection system is very old so the quality of picture is poor. Ticket price should be half of what they charge at the multiplexes as you are getting half of the comfort and poor picture and sound quality. It is appealing for the older crowd as it is usually quiet there do to the small volume of business they do.
This theater is the best in Raleigh. As the others here have said, the feel of this theater is what was the best of the old days of movie going. I feel welcome every time I go. The rest of the audience is like me - looking for a quiet movie setting with others that appreciate the same movies and have consideration for other people.
It is the best and the staff is like family.
This is a great classic theater that needs everyone's support to keep going. We'll miss this place if it goes away. The prices are extremely reasonable, the staff is really courteous, and the movies aren't like what you're going to find in every corporate theater - it's OK to be surprised by a movie again. The beverages and popcorn are much more reasonably priced, and the menu includes beer and wine.
Compared to the multi-plexes that seat 50 people, the Colony's screens may be bigger than the initial reviewer thinks - the seating areas are easily twice as large or larger than the newer theaters.
If you want to experience what going to a movie theater used to be like, including connecting with strangers around you sharing a great experience (something you can't do at home), then come to the Colony.
Great place for indy movies that you won't see anywhere else!!! They have REAL popcorn, made right before your very eyes, AND it's reasonably priced -- typically $9 for popcorn and two drinks. Folks behind the counter are friendly, and courteous. This is a classic old-timey theatre with only two screens and no 'stadium' seats, which is fine with me. I far prefer the Colony to the cineplex ripoffs that have the volume cranked up to deafening.
I agree with the previous review but that is precisely why I love this theatre. The Colony has been there for years and I have gone to see films there since I was a child. I guess the nostalgic element is one reason I love it but also the fact that it is a small theatre and not another no-personality multiplex with tons of annoying teens just hanging out everywhere.
