Mickey Mouse is spitting out his cheese right now. I just imagine the little guy seeing how his beloved Mouse House has taken his most iconic film role and pretty much tried to exploit it with this CGI mess. He's marching through the halls looking for the person responsible. Unfortunately for him, as with most film messes, there are too many people to blame.
Coming from the brains of five credited writers (and I'm sure untold ghost writers and studio execs who think they're writers), the film stars Nicholas Cage (a normally reliable actor who's taking things a bit too seriously here) as Balthazar, a sorcerer who has an old (and I mean like 1,300 years old) nemesis in Alfred Molina's Horvath. Now it's 2010, and Horvath is loose, trying to bring evil to the world. Balthazar finds Dave, a nerdy physics student who may be the Prime Merlinean (that's their term, not mine), and teaches him everything he needs to know. Then they battle evil.
That's it. Good versus evil is about all you need to know. But Star Wars was good versus evil, and that movie is a classic. This one isn't. The script is overwritten, the characters just aren't that interesting (except for Horvath, and I think a lot of the credit for that should go to Molina). As usual, there is an too much reliance on effects, so that any story needs to take a backseat to fireballs being shot out of hands. There's some cool stuff (like fire breathing Chinatown dragons and building gargoyles that become birds), but mostly, this stuff is for 10 year old boys with ADD. I'd rather watch Mickey's apprentice; it's much more entertaining.
